Resize or crop? Choose without stretching the image

Resize and crop solve different problems. Resizing changes the size of the whole frame. Cropping removes part of the frame so the remaining area fits a new shape.

Prepared by Readyvio from implemented and automated-tested tool behavior. Published 12 September 2026; last reviewed 12 September 2026.

Compare aspect ratios before changing pixels

Aspect ratio is width divided by height. A 1200 × 800 image and a 600 × 400 requirement share the same 3:2 ratio, so a proportional resize can fit without cutting or stretching. A 1200 × 800 image and a 600 × 600 requirement do not share a ratio.

Forcing different proportions through a plain resize distorts the picture. Circles become ovals and faces look unnaturally narrow or wide. Cropping is normally the better choice when the destination requires a different shape.

Use focal position deliberately

An exact crop must decide which edges to remove. Readyvio’s horizontal and vertical focal controls shift the retained area toward the important subject. Center is a useful starting point, but portraits may need more space above the head and documents may need every edge visible.

The tool verifies output pixel dimensions, not composition, biometric suitability, or official acceptance. Compare the finished image with the destination’s current visual rules.

Decision checklist

Choose the least destructive operation that meets the published requirement.

  • Same proportions: resize while preserving the aspect ratio.
  • Different proportions and edges can be removed: crop to the exact size.
  • Different proportions and nothing can be removed: add padding in an appropriate editor rather than stretching.
  • After any change, verify dimensions and inspect faces, text, borders, and headroom.
